📘 What You Study

DCG replaces the old Technical Drawing course at Leaving Cert. It is a design-oriented subject with strong emphasis on:

  • 2D and 3D geometric problem solving

  • Freehand sketching and visual communication

  • Technical drawing using traditional drafting equipment and CAD (SolidWorks)

  • Plane geometry, descriptive geometry, surface intersections, applied graphics systems
Graphic communication and conceptual design thinking are core to the course.

📝 Exam & Project Structure

Assessment is split into:

  • Summative (Final) exam (60%) — a board drawing exam testing a wide range of geometric, descriptive and applied topics.

  • Student assignment/project (40%) — issued early in 6th Year; students produce an A3 folio showing research, sketches, CAD work and working drawings. Topics change each year (e.g., travel mug, headset design, etc.).

DCG does not require you to have studied graphics at Junior Cycle, though many find it helpful.

💼 Career & Progression

DCG is especially valuable if you are considering:

  • Architecture, construction and surveying

  • Engineering and industrial design

  • Product design and manufacturing

  • CAD-related and 3D modelling careers
It strengthens visualisation, technical drawing and problem-solving skills used in many technical and design-oriented degrees.
