📘 What You Study

Leaving Cert Technology involves understanding how technological systems and products are designed, developed, and manufactured. It covers:

  • Design processes & project management

  • Materials and manufacturing techniques

  • Communications & graphic media

  • Energy, electricity and basic electronics

  • Structures and mechanisms

  • Information & communications technologies
Students also study an optional module (e.g., manufacturing systems, applied control systems, materials technology) to explore in depth.

The subject blends theory with practical application and creative problem-solving.

📝 Exam & Project Structure

Assessment typically includes:

  • Terminal exam (~50%) — written paper covering both core and optional modules.

  • Project (~50%) — a design and make task with an artefact and a portfolio/report demonstrating your design process, testing and evaluation.
The project brief is issued partway through 6th Year (usually around 3 weeks in) and completed by the end of March.

💼 Career & Progression

Technology supports a wide range of pathways, such as:

  • Engineering and manufacturing

  • Product development and design

  • ICT and digital systems

  • Construction and related trades

  • Media, design and industrial technologies
It provides a good balance of practical design, technical theory, and digital literacy useful in many modern careers.
